저와 집사람은 지난 주간 달라스에서 열린 ‘목회 리더십 연례 총회’ 세미나에 다녀왔습니다. 침례교회 선배 목사님들이 미주이민교회의 어려움과 갈등을 직접 간접적으로 경험하고 지켜보면서 후배 목사들을 위해 자발적으로 조직하여 이 세미나를 개최하였습니다. 침례교회는 각 교회 중심으로 개교회들이 지역적으로 분화되어 있는 지방회에 속할 수 있고, 주총회에 가입할 수 있으며 더 나아가 전국총회에 소속될 수도 있습니다. 저희 교회는 휴스턴을 중심으로 모여 있는 침례교회들이 가입하는 텍사스 남부 지방회 그리고 텍사스 주총회, 한인 텍사스 주총회, 남침례회 한인전국총회에 가입되어 있습니다. 총회가 지방회의 상위기관이 되어 통제하는 기능은 없습니다. 침례교회는 개교회 중심의 회중정치를 추구하기 때문에 상위조직이 조직력이나 행정력으로 개교회의 목회적 행정적 결정을 통제하지 않습니다. 그래서 침례교회는 교단(denomination)이기 보다는 협의회(association)에 가깝습니다. 이 외에도 많은 모임과 조직이 자발적으로 형성되어 목회와 목사가정의 복지를 돕습니다. ‘목회 리더십 연례 총회’ 세미나도 그중 하나입니다.
저희는 먼 거리를 운전해야 하기 때문에 이틀에 나눠서 달라스까지 갔습니다. 중간에 친구 목사님 댁에 묵으면서 교제를 할 수 있었습니다. 지난 해 제가 간증설교를 위해 방문했던 샌안토니오 한인교회인데 담임목사인 이 목사님과 목회관과 세계관이 비슷해서 금방 친해졌습니다. 이 목사님은 구약학 박사로서 여러 침례교 신학대학교에서 강의를 하고 있습니다. 세미나 첫날 첫 강의 시간에 이 목사님이 성경적인 목회 리더십을 발표했습니다. 엘리야, 모세, 예수님이 보여주신 영적 리더십이었습니다. 영적 리더십이 사회적 리더십과 어떻게 다른 지를 보여주는 통찰력이 있는 발표였습니다. 세상에서 성공한 리더십은 많은 사람들에게 알려지고 영향력을 끼치고 물질적으로 풍요해지고 사회적으로 높은 위치에 올라서는 결과를 가져옵니다. 그러나 성경에서 보여주는 리더십은 달랐습니다. 엘리야는 갈멜산에서 하늘의 불을 내리며 우상을 섬기는 제사장 850명을 무찔렀던 선지자였습니다. 그러나 이세벨의 엄포에 도망가 숨어 지내면서 절망의 순간에 죽기를 간청했던 연약한 인간으로 전락합니다. 엘리야의 리더십은 후퇴하는 모습의 리더십이었지만 그 후퇴를 통해 하나님을 더욱 깊게 알게 됩니다. 세상의 리더십은 후퇴를 실패로 여기지만 성경적 리더십의 후퇴는 하나님을 더욱 알게 되는 성공의 길이 됩니다. 하나님께서 제시하시는 이 세상의 삶은 세상에서 추구하는 삶과 다릅니다.
I and my wife went to the Seminar on the Pastoral Leadership General Assembly in Dallas last week. Pastors of the Baptist Church directly and indirectly experienced the difficulties and conflicts of the American immigrant church. The Baptist Church can be centered on local councils where the churches are different from each church, joining the General Assembly, and further belonging to the National Assembly. Our church is joined by the Texas southern districts, the Texas State Congress, the Korean Texas State Council, and the South Korean National Assembly. There is no function to control the General Assembly as the top teaching agency of the district. Since the Baptist Church pursues the congregation politics centered on the church, the upper organization does not control the pastoral administrative decision of the church with administrative power. In addition, many meetings and organizations are voluntarily formed to help the church ministry and pastoral welfare. One of them is the Seminar on Pastoral Leadership. We have to drive a long distance, so we went to Dallas for two days. In the middle, I was able to stay in my friend's house. Last year, I visited the San Antonio Korean Church for testimony sermons, and I was close to the pastor Lee. He is a Ph.D. At the first lecture on the first day of the seminar, Pastor Lee announced a biblical pastoral leadership. Elijah, Moses, Jesus was the spiritual leadership. It was an insight that spiritual leadership showed how different from social leadership. Successful leadership in the world is known to many people, influenced, material rich, and socially high. But the leadership in the Bible was different. Elijah was a prophet, who defeated 850 priests who lit the sky and serve the idols. But as he runs away from Jezebel's threat, he falls into a fragile human who has begun to die at the moment of despair. Elijah's leadership was a retreat leadership, but with the retreat, he learned a deeper relationship with God. Leadership in the world regards retreat as failure, but the retreat of biblical leadership is the way of success to know God more. The life of this world presented by God is different from the life pursued in the world.
